Farmhouse Table or Bust

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

I've been ready for a dining room makeover for a while. My style preference has completely changed since I bought my current dining set 8 yrs ago. I was newly married and childless and this very formal cherry dining set with glass inserts on the table seemed perfect to me. Don't get me wrong I love the storage that my hutch provides and the fact that I can display the beautiful fine china that I never use but it's just not practical for our family anymore. We NEVER eat on that table. Glass and children don't mesh well. Plus the ivory upholstery on the chairs is a disaster waiting to happen. We've kept the plastic on as long as we possibly can but over the last couple of years the kids have enjoyed slowly picking it off so that now only a few bits remain. Time for it to go. It's supposed to be picked up today but this crazy weather may put that on hold.

I'd much rather find something along these lines. More casual, more practical, more kid friendly. The 2nd one down is quite similar to the one we have in a breakfast nook that we eat on daily except that ours is a smaller counter height version that has a hidden butterfly leaf to help it expand to a large square. I like the simplicity of this first one made from a repurposed barn door. And the rustic paint job on that last one. I'd probably do my table in white and the chairs in an even paler blue...maybe like the blue I used on my shutters...summer sorbet. Too bad these furniture builders aren't local. I do live in the furniture capital of the world so surely I'll be able to find what I want. I'm officially on the hunt...and on a tight budget of course. Wish me luck!

  1. I totally agree. The first picture is beautiful, but only if you use it everyday. I think practicality should trump image. Besides, that last set is beautiful.

We are in the midst of downsizing and this time, I want everything to be as low-maintenance as possible. This is hard for me because I have always been extremely picky about style (I like extreme modern and retro designs). I would much rather have a very clean neat well-organized home that a cluttered mess with gorgeous antique or retro-modern furniture.

  3. I've enjoyed the clean pared down look for some time and am striving to that end to a degree, yet I still love my tablescape vignettes and lovely antiques!..,

I want to invite you to come to tea in 'my little corner of the blog world', where tea is served every Tuesday and Wednesday!..,

    Have a marvelous day,
